This Emergency Medical Services (EMS) credential-related course must adhere to the most current guidelines established by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) as applicable to this initial Paramedic course. This may include, but not be limited to, OEMS Education Institution approval, program director and instructor standards, classroom and distance education course approval, admissions requirements, course content, equipment standards, clinical and/or field requirements, and skills documentation. OEMS guidelines align with the rules of the NC Medical Care Commission and standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Requirements

  • 17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course.
  • High school diploma or high school equivalency.
  • Possession of a valid and active North Carolina EMT Credential, NREMT or other states EMS Credential prior to the start of the clinical/field component.
  • Successful completion of college-level English, or within the previous 12 months complete a written assessment with a score equivalent to the 12th grade level.
  • Successful completion of college-level Math, or within the previous 12 months complete a written assessment with a score equivalent to the 12th grade level.
  • Successful completion of a college-level Anatomy and Physiology course prior to the start of the field education component.
    • Courses that are currently accepted include:
    • EMS- 3163 Basic Anatomy and Physiology
      • When the course meets all other requirements of these guidelines, to include meeting SACSCOC standards for instructors of curriculum-level courses.
    • BIO- 163: Basic Anatomy and Physiology
    • BIO- 165 & 166: Anatomy and Physiology I & II (Must complete both sections)
      • Equivalent CE courses will be accepted, when the course meets all other requirements of these guidelines, to include meeting SACSCOC standards for instructors of curriculum-level courses.
    • BIO- 168 & 169: Anatomy and Physiology I & II (Must complete both sections)
      • Equivalent CE courses will be accepted, when the course meets all other requirements of these guidelines, to include meeting SACSCOC standards for instructors of curriculum-level courses.
    • Accepted courses shall possess articulation agreements for curriculum credit.

  • RCC does not guarantee the admission of any student to a field/clinical site. A student’s acceptance, participation, and continuation at any field/clinical site are subject to the approval and consent of the field/clinical site. Students must be able to attend and progress in the assigned field/clinical area for each course. Alternate assignments will not be made because of inability to progress in an assigned field/clinical setting.
